How to dress: Denim dresses
This summer has the potential to turn even the most resolute jeans person into a dress wearer. The denim dress is a wolf in sheep's clothing: utilitarian in decorative guise. A denim dress is quite different from any other dress, because denim is a mood and a lifestyle and an attitude, as well as a fabric. Denim is as much about Bruce Springsteen and Nick Kamen as it is about Japanese selvage and copper rivets. Some fabrics are chosen for their texture (silk) or depth of colour (velvet); denim's USP is that it can hold a mood.
The laid-back mood of denim suits summer, and the no-nonsense practicality, too. You can buy fish and chips and sit on the sea wall to eat them, without fretting about the fabric snagging on rough edges. When the sun comes out, you can lie down in the park without worrying about grass stains. When the sun goes in, you will not immediately start to shiver. But just as there comes a point around spring when you have to pack away the black opaques and embrace the feeble sunlight, there is a portion of summer when jeans feel like a cop-out. They are a bit killjoy for high-summer wear, at least before 5pm.

A denim dress has the same essential feel as jeans and a T-shirt, plus you get to swing your legs in the fresh air and rejoice in it being summer. If that's not enough to put you in a good mood, I don't know what is.
