Snake expert slithers into Brattleboro
Thursday June 30, 2011BRATTLEBORO -- Just because a rattlesnake has not been seen in southeastern Vermont in more than 25 years, Jim Andrews is not going to stop looking.
Andrews is a herpetologist, and he has been tracking all 41 species of Vermont's reptiles and amphibians since 1994.
At his online registry, The Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas, Andrews collects photos and reports of all of the state's snakes, turtles, salamanders and frogs, and its single species of lizard -- the Common Five-lined Skink.
Tonight, he is coming to the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center in Brattleboro to talk about his work.
His talk will begin at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
He is also putting the word out to everyone with a cell phone, digital camera and handheld video device who likes to hike in the woods to be on their toes, because they can help him update the atlas.
"Even though this is a small state I can't be everywhere," he said about getting more reptile and amphibian lovers involved in his cause. "These maps can show us where the gaps in our knowledge exist."
Andrews teaches at the University of Vermont.
At his online Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas, which can be found at community.middlebury.edu/ ~herpatlas/, viewers can see photos of all of the rare and common species, and track where some of the more elusive snakes, frogs or turtles have been seen.
"It's an effort to document the current distribution of reptiles and amphibians in Vermont," said Andrews.
Southeastern Vermont has some of the most unusual habitat in the state, he said, as it borders a warmer region and some very rare snakes have been spotted in Windham County.
"There are species that are found in the Connecticut River Valley that are not found anywhere else in Vermont," he said. "People who like to work or hike in the outdoors can help me spot some of them and let me know."
He said the last hognose snake seen in Vermont was spotted in Vernon two years ago and a rare toad was also photographed along the Connecticut River in Windham County.
But the one snake, which has not been seen in Vermont since 2008, is the North American racer, and he is giving the talk at BEEC to get people in the Brattleboro aware and looking.
"People have stories, but we haven't seen one in a few years," he said. "I would love to know if anyone has seen one of these snakes.
