Woman charged with murder in Perry; allegedly shot brother's companion
A woman was charged with murder in Perry County in the death of her brother's companion after firing a shotgun that struck both, Kentucky State Police said Wednesday.
Sarah Melton, 42, fired a shotgun after a dispute with her brother, Kirby William Couch, 46, who was riding an all-terrain vehicle with Cindy L. Caudill, also 46, according to a police news release. They were traveling on Brownsfork Road near the Brownsfork community in Perry County.
Caudill was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Couch was flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he was in stable condition, according to the news release.
In addition to murder, Melton was charged with attempted murder. She was taken to the Kentucky River Regional Jail.

(Hazard, Ky.) -- On January 13, 2011 at 9:45 pm, the Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a 911 call of an Armed Robbery at the Hazard Double Quick #1 on North Kentucky Highway 15 (also known as the Daniel Boone BP) in the Hazard area of Perry County. Upon the arrival of KSP Troopers, it was determined that an unknown white male subject, 5'5"-5'8", medium build, with possible green eyes entered the store wearing a black toboggan over his face. He was also wearing a bluish green hooded sweatshirt, blue jean pants, and brandishing a small caliber handgun. He forced the store clerk to open the cash register and took a large amount of cash from the register. While the male subject was exiting the store, he discharged the firearm inside the store then fled on foot. Evidence from the scene indicates that the male subject went down the mountain behind the store. The last known location of the suspect was near the bottom of Crawford Mountain Road. A search of the immediate area did not turn up any suspects at this time. The investigation is continuing by the Kentucky State Police Post in Hazard.
