Iowa Man Working at Fort Riley Wins $200000 Lottery Prize

John Malota will always remember Ft. Riley as the place where he was stationed in the Army 40 years ago. Now Malota has another great reason to keep Kansas and Ft. Riley close to his heart, or should we say 200,000 great reasons? The 64-year-old matched the first five numbers in the June 29 Powerball drawing, winning a $200,000 cash prize. He bought his $5 Quick Pick ticket at a Junction City convenience store.

“This is something that just came out of the blue!” said the happy winner. “It was totally unexpected.” Malota makes his home in Mountain Home, Idaho. He and his son, John Malota, Jr., paint buildings at military bases all over the country, which is why they have been at Ft. Riley for about a month now.

“I’m going to put the big check the Lottery gave me in the window of my car so everybody at Ft. Riley can see it,” Malota said. “The guys have already been giving me a hard time about winning big money.”

It’s money Malota says he and his family can really use. He said they will use the prize to get their home paid off and catch up on bills. Malota and his wife Christine have been married 41 years. They have three grown children and three grandchildren.

“When I was on the phone with Christine today, I told her the ‘check’s in the mail,’” laughed Malota. “She’s pretty excited about the whole thing.”

Malota purchased his lucky Powerball ticket at Shop Quik 6, located at 821 East Chestnut in Junction City. For selling the $200,000 ticket, the store becomes eligible for a $1,000 selling bonus.
