We read EVERY comment before it is posted. This may take a while. Relax. If you don't see your comment right away, don't worry. We'll read it, make sure it doesn't break the rest of these rules, and then post it. It won't happen right away. Be nice. This is a civil conversation. You don't have to agree, but don't be mean. No name calling, profanity, hate speech, personal attacks, threatening or violent comments, sexually explicit or crude comments, or anything just plain rude. A good point doesn't need to include calling someone a "moron" or "white trash". Be factual, as much as you can. Don't throw out comments you can't verify. Don't spread rumors or lies. That doesn't help anyone. And don't throw any libel out, either.

This is a community conversation, but The Independent is controlling it on our site. Therefore, we set the rules. If you don't like them, we're sorry, but they are the rules. The opinions are those of the author and not the administrators, moderators or the paper, and therefore the Grand Island Independent will not be held liable.

If your comments don't follow all guidelines above, it will not be posted.

We will allow opinions some might find offensive. We will allow conversation that is strident in tone. We will allow criticism of public officials. And we will allow opinions some may find offensive about tough social issues around race and sexual orientation, as long as they don't break the rules above.

Kent Island High School Students Attend Leadership Workshop ...

Twelve Kent Island High School Student Government Officers (2010-2011) participated in a one day youth leadership workshop on Saturday, June 12th at the Chesapeake Exploration Center in Chester.

Students represented the newly elected SGA officers comprised of 10th, 11th and 12th graders, under the supervision of SGA Advisor, James Evans.

The workshop content included the characteristics of good leaders and the formula for success. Major emphasis was placed on the goal setting process and the students worked in small groups setting pertinent goals for the SGA for the upcoming year.

“I had a lot of fun,” said Marquise Singleterry, “and I hope we use and accomplish the goals we established at this conference.” According to Nikki Jones, “The workshop was well organized and educational. It gave me an opportunity to bond, get to know and talk with my fellow SGA members.”

KIHS also practices PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports, a program actively supported by the SGA.  Advisor, James Evan, spoke to the students about the expectations of PBIS, PBIS Ambassadorship and how to become PBIS driven.

The workshop was sponsored by CloseCall America which is a Queen Anne’s County Business of Character. CloseCall America, based in Stevensville since 1999, provides local and long distance telephone services, wireless, Blackberry, DSL/Internet and Digital phone services.  The workshop facilitator, Eileen Nonemaker of Paradigm Associates, Queenstown is a certified business coach and former educator.  Paradigm Associates is also a Queen Anne’s County Business of Character. The workshop content was adapted from the “America’s Rising Stars” youth leadership program developed by Resource Associates Corporation in Wyomissing, PA.

Chevy Chase Bank, Chester, provided lunch for the participants and Bob Gosselin Photography, also in Chester, documented the event with photographs taken during the facilitation.
