From ice to chainsaws to generators, local businesses grapple with storm ...

Local businesses continued to grappled with consumer needs -- and their own problems -- in the wake of Monday's storm.

The Hy-Vee grocery store at 14th and Harrison has been without power since 2 a.m. Monday. Steve Labs, store manager, says multiple generators are being used to keep the store open.

"It's pretty limited," Labs said Tuesday morning. "We are just trying to keep everything cold and frozen as it needs to be. People are picking up necessities and we are ringing them up, and we are cooking what we can to keep people fed."

Labs said the store ran out of ice but expects to have more in today.

The Hy-Vee at 36th and Broadway did not lose power, and store manager Mark Lammers says there has been a huge run on ice and fresh goods, along with batteries.

"We never even blinked. Now I have a semi-load of ice on the dock and a pallet of (bottled) water in the entryway," Lammers said Tuesday morning. "Anything fresh, anything made and ready to eat, it's flying out of here."

Some customers are walking in and saying power has just been restored at their homes, meaning they need to stock up on certain items.

"Optimism is pretty good and spirits are high," Lammers said. "So what do you do when you get everything back on? You have your freezers that you basically have to get filled back up."

Both County Market stores in Quincy are now up and running. The County Market on 24th Street was forced to close due to a power outage for about 18 hours Monday, reopening about 8:30 p.m. Monday. The County Market at 48th and Broadway has been open throughout the storm and aftermath, but it lost some of its power early Tuesday morning.

"We've been having a lot of people coming in buying water, ice ... chicken, a lot of sides (dishes)," Dwayne Brown, assistant manager at the County Market on 24th, said.

Donna Jansen manages a County Market Express in West Quincy, Mo., and she has been "swamped" for the past two days with customers coming in for a variety of items -- especially ice.

You can do it as an individual or it could be a group like your Master Plumbers Association. If you're trying to protect the water system and the public, this would seem to have a bigger and lasting impact...bigger than just refusing to install them on your own. The National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC) Committee reviewed more than 90 submitted changes to the NSPC at a public hearing June 9 in Atlantic City, N.J. More than 70 proponents and members of the public were on hand for the day and in the end, 64 items were voted in as changes to the code. Included in the voting was the inclusion of the plumbing chapters from the IAPMO Green Plumbing & Mechanical Code Supplement as an Appendix to the NSPC, which provides contractors sustainable options. The approved code changes and the 2010 NSPC Supplement items will be merged into the code to form the 2012 National Standard Plumbing Code.
