Two officers injured in crash | Philadelphia Inquirer | 2011-06-29
Two Philadelphia police officers were seriously injured Wednesday night in a crash between their cruiser and another vehicle at Broad Street and Hunting Park Avenue, police said.
Shortly before 9 p.m., Highway Patrol officers stopped a vehicle containing two people at 15th and Wingohocking Streets and requested backup, police said.
Two officers in a 25th District patrol car responded to the call for assistance and headed north. The driver was identified only as a female with eight years on the force. Her colleague in the cruiser was a male with six years' service. They were riding parallel to a Jeep containing two people, police said.
"Both were going northbound. There was some kind of contact and they ricocheted," said Lt. Raymond Evers, a police spokesman.
The cruiser struck a fence and a pole near Broad and Hunting Park, Evers said. The female officer sustained neck and head injuries, and the male officer was injured in the hip area, he said.
Both officers were taken to Temple University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition late Wednesday night.
The two people in the Jeep were uninjured and able to drive away, police said.
Neither car broke any traffic law, police said.
Speaking Wednesday night at Temple Hospital, Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said: "I'm just happy we've got a situation [where] they're injured but it's not life-threatening."
Police did not say what led to the stop at 15th and Wingohocking, but a person was arrested nearby and officers were searching for the other.
The intersection of Broad and Hunting Park was closed to traffic Wednesday night.
