Juan Williams: Media Matters, the War on Fox News and Me

At first glance “Media Matters” is a group that monitors the wild and crazy comments that are made on radio and television. There is nothing wrong with that. People should be accountable for their words – words have power.

Since they began work in 2004, however, the watchdog spirit of the group's founding has turned into an outright assault on its political opponents. That means they delight in attacking anyone with a conservative point of view on radio or TV. In fact, they have now announced they are engaged in a “war” against Fox News Channel and anyone who appears on their airwaves. They have also admitted to engaging in a despicable campaign to dig up dirt on Fox News executives and producers in an attempt to do personal damage to people who are guilty of offering the public political perspectives they find disagreeable.

That means they have targeted me. Yes, I am paid by Fox News to do political analysis. It is also true that on most issues I am left of center – what most on the far right call a liberal. And I go to political battle over ideas and policies by offering my views, hearing other viewpoints and often challenging conservative arguments on Fox.

Yet, apparently as part of their assault on Fox and its employees, Media Matters has targeted me for years for making what they smugly and fatuously call “false claims.” They cheered as I was fired from National Public Radio last October and praised NPR’s management for their courage. Their only complaint was that NPR did not also fire my friend and Fox News colleague Mara Liasson, at the same time.

Media Matters has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, courtesy of far-left donors like billionaire George Soros , to silence me and other media figures with whom they disagree under the guise of fighting back against the power of conservative media outlets.

But the honest way to win an argument is with ideas, facts and the power of persuasion. It is not about smearing people, playing “gotcha” over statements taken out of context and destroying news organizations.

Q & A On Power Of Persuasion Quotes | How Do You Influence People

Cunningness along with persuasiveness are both qualities that Cassius and Mark Antony share. Cassius shows his cunningness when he tells Brutus stories of how weak Caesar is. “He had a fever when he was in Spain, and when the fit was on him, I did mark how he did shake.’Tis true, this god did shake; His coward lips did from their color fly, and that same eye whose bend doth awe the world did lose his luster. I did hear him groan.” (Act I scene ii lines 125-130). This gets Brutus thinking about actually conspiring against his friend Caesar. Antony shows his power of persuasion by getting Brutus to allow him to speak to the people regarding Caesar’s death, and then uses his cunning and wit in his speech to get the people on his side. His famous speech that is often quoted in today’s world begins with this: “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! Even though Antony and Cassius use the same traits to get what they want, one key difference is their motivation. Cassius’ motivation is clearly his jealousy of Caesars’ power and fame, which leads to a conspiracy against Caesar, and his murder. Cassius even says “Ye gods! It doth amaze me a man of such feeble temper should so get the start of the majestic world and bear the palm alone.” (Act I scene ii lines 134-137). Cassius is saying he does not think that it is fair for Caesar to have all of this glory and power , so he gets jealous, which is his motivation. Antony on the other hand is motivated by revenge. In a soliloquy with Caesar’s body, Antony reveals his plan to get revenge on those who have conspired against Caesar. (Act III scene i). The next key difference is a character trait that is required for any hero to have, which is honor. This is a quality that Cassius lacks, and Antony is rich in. “This was the noblest Roman of them all” (Act IV scene iv lines 68-75) was spoken by Mark Antony about Brutus after Brutus’ death. To have respect for your adversaries, especially the deceased ones, is one of the most honorable things a person can do. Cassius is the complete and utter opposite of Antony in regards to this trait. An example of this would be his accepting of bribes to promote people in his army (Act IV scene iii).
