Commentary: Next up, pictures of 400-pound kids on Big Macs, Whoppers
They are shocking photos, graphic pictures of diseased lungs, rotting teeth and a dead body. Many will say the pictures are revolting. They are all nauseatingly graphic. For most, the images will be very difficult to stomach when they buy or open a pack of cigarettes.
Of course, I'm referring to nine photos the Food and Drug Administration has selected to carry out the federal Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which Congress passed in 2009 in an effort to scare smokers to quit and frighten nonsmokers to avoid the habit like the plague. Shortly, these grisly, full-color photos will adorn every pack of cigarettes sold all to provide a terrifying reminder of the dire consequences of lighting up.
This is just the latest phase of the government's battle against tobacco addiction. The crusade started in 1965 with the federal law requiring all tobacco products to carry the warning, "Caution: Cigarette Smoking May be Hazardous to Your Health" a pretty gentle nudge by today's standards.
The FDA-mandated warnings grew more forceful over the years. In 1970, the stern message became: Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined That Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous to Your Health." No ifs, ands or buts, smoking is dangerous!
Then, in 1985 an even more dire and direct warning was mandated: "SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema and May Complicate Pregnancy."
The new federal law requires color graphics and additional text depicting the negative consequences of smoking to cover 50 percent of the front and back of packs of cigarettes. Talk about being beaten over the head by Uncle Sam.
The progression of written warning labels into graphic, full-color warnings is an ominous development for our "nanny state" that could spread to other potentially dangerous products.
Consider a federal law mandating that all beer and liquor bottles display grotesque photos of totaled autos and the mangled bodies of victims of drunken-driving accidents. Or, maybe a law requiring power tool and chain saw instruction manuals to feature grisly photos of amputated fingers or limbs.
Or, maybe federal lawmakers will consider requiring all manufacturers of ATV's, snowmobiles and dirt bikes to festoon their owners' manuals with photos of paraplegics and quadriplegics in their wheelchairs.
No doubt, other activists will lobby for warnings on fatty, salty and sugary fast-food products. Just imagine the FDA requiring the picture of a 400-pound morbidly obese teenager on the packaging for a Big Mac or Whopper. Or, maybe photos of diabetic amputees on bottles and cans of those sugary carbonated beverages.

Jacobson believes there are diseases worse than lung or throat cancer, such as emphysema, that could be a powerful visual tool to prevent some people from lighting up. He suggested a real-life image that he believes could hit home for some people.
So many well-known personalities from high places have been addicted to smoking and refused to kick it out until they died due to emphysema or lung cancer. JR Mondonedo Jr., Parañaque City: I don't think so because generally, people who smoke are

calling the images “nonfactual and controversial” and, what's more – brace yourself – “intended to elicit loathing, disgust and repulsion.” Where is the Marlboro Man when you need him? Unavailable, alas. Wayne McLaren died of lung cancer, age 51,
Alas, the curse of smoking-related cancer found its way through her entire body, including her brain, and felled this vibrant woman forty years too early. Imposed by new requirements of the FDA, cigarette packs will soon bear graphic images of death,

My attorney at work said that I would still need approximately another two months (comfortably) of time outside of the US that they can recapture. This extension would take me into late January 2011, more than one year past the point of the PERM filing. They can, at that point, apply for a 'seventh year' H-1B extension based on my PERM process having been pending for more than one year. Here is my question. Since I am currently in my fifth year of my h-1b, would it be possible now to apply for the sixth year of h-1b visa until October 2011 instead of looking at seventh year? I started my h-1b in October 2005. Therefore, I have until six years before my h-1b visa can expire, is that correct? If this is not correct, I would appreciate if anyone has any other suggestions to avoid travelling for 2 months out of US prior to July 2010. My attorney applied for 140 porting but received priority date as Jan 2011 instead of may 2006. My attorney says immigrations has made a mistake, attorney contacted them and received a reference number basically asking attorney to call back on Jun 1st. I'm concerned on what went wrong and what could be the worst case scenario. How much time are talking about here. The risk is that you do not know which petition will be approved first. According to the "last action rules" principle, the last petition to be approved will be your wife's status. For instance, if the H4 petition is approved last she may need to file a change of status to be in H1 or alternatively travel out and re-enter with the desired visa, and vice-versa.
