Shoreline man charged in Greenwood abduction, rape case

A Shoreline man — along with another man — kidnapped and raped a 20-year-old woman last week in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, according to charging papers filed by King County prosecutors on Friday. Prosecutors charged Jose Jimenez-Lopez, 24, with rape in the first degree, kidnapping in the first degree and attempted kidnapping in the first degree, according to court documents.

A Shoreline man — along with another man — kidnapped and raped a 20-year-old woman last week in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, according to charging papers filed by King County prosecutors on Friday.

Prosecutors charged Jose Jimenez-Lopez, 24, with rape in the first degree, kidnapping in the first degree and attempted kidnapping in the first degree, according to court documents.

He is being held on $1 million bail in the King County Jail. Police also suspect that Jimenez-Lopez, who is being held on immigration hold, was involved in three armed robberies, according to charging papers.

On June 21, shortly before 1 a.m., a 20-year-old woman and her 19-year-old friend were walking at Dayton Avenue North and North 97th Street when two men jumped out at them from the bushes at the northeast corner of the intersection, charging papers say. One of the men pointed a handgun at the 20-year-old, forced her to the ground and struck the woman's face with the butt of the handgun multiple times, charging papers say. The man grabbed the victim around the neck, forced her into their parked car and drove away, charging papers say.

Jimenez-Lopez tried to force the woman's friend into the car but she was able to escape, charging papers say.

Hours later, the men dropped off the 20-year-old woman off in Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood where officers found her with a broken tooth, laceration to her head, a cut to her lip and a cut to her jaw, according to court documents. According to court papers, the woman told police the men had driven to a wooded area and raped her in the back seat of their car. Afterward, they poured beer over her genital area and hair, she told police.

The victim later identified Jimenez-Lopez as one of the attackers from a surveillance video at the 7-Eleven on 15th Avenue Northeast where he bought beer, charging papers say.

On June 28, Jimenez-Lopez was arrested at Goofy's Bar and Grill in Seattle's Crown Hill neighborhood after police were contacted by a bartender who recognized his face. He affirmed to police that it was him in the 7-Eleven surveillance video.

It seems that a lot of people are moving into apartments Seattle because of the housing crisis and the high rate of foreclosures. In fact 6,796 new units are projected to hit the Seattle-Bellevue market in 2013.

Some people are worried that the market will be overbuilt with all the new units. This could bring freebies and perks to renters but would probably keep developers and bankers from realizing the profits they expected. “There’s a dance between the two markets,” Conway added, “and I wonder what that dance will look like three years from now.”

Right now it’s still cheaper to rent than own in the Seattle area — but the gap is getting smaller as rents rise and house prices fall.
