Montgomery's traffic light problems fixed in time for commute home
A glitch that affected traffic lights in Montgomery County and slowed the morning commute has been repaired in time for the evening rush hour, according to a county spokeswoman.
Officials announced at about 3 p.m. that the 200 lights that had been out of synchronization have been fixed.
Drivers in Montgomery County were warned before dawn to expect “a significant impact” on their morning commute after overnight storms fouled the signals in the Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Damascus and Derwood.
Intersections in the Route 355 corridor north of the Capital Beltway a major thoroughfare known in different stretches as Wisconsin Avenue, Rockville Pike, Hungerford Drive and Frederick Road were hardest hit.
Commuters were encouraged to take public transportation and officials advised that roads near Route 355 could become clogged as drivers sought other routes through neighborhoods.
While the traffic signals were working, many were not in their rush-hour timing mode and drivers complained of waits of five minutes at some intersections, about two times longer than usual.
Montgomery County’s 30-year-old traffic management system is one of the most sophisticated in the country but it is showing its age. The county has been phasing in millions of dollars in upgrades. About half of the 800 signals controlled by the computerized system have been upgraded, Bowring said, and 200 of the older signals are the ones hobbled.
More than 50,000 cars and trucks pass through major intersections along Route 355 in the Rockville and Gaithersburg areas each day, according to one federal study.
A fast-moving cluster of thunderstorms passed through the area late Tuesday night, dumping heavy rain in some places, but causing little other damage.
Repair crews are “speculating it was a lightning strike that caused the power to go out” and hardware that controls the traffic-control system was affected, Bowring said.

TAVARES — The Lake County Department of Public Works will continue the process next week of rolling out improvements to the traffic light synchronization timing that began last month. The second phase will include improvements to several intersections along State Road 19 in Eustis. The changes will help improve traffic flow through major intersections by decreasing delays and wait times at traffic signals in an effort to reduce fossil-fuel emissions.
“We’ve gotten very positive feedback on the changes that recently occurred with the traffic light retiming in the Golden Triangle area,” said Noble Olasimbo, Engineer, Lake County Department of Public Works. “Motorists are now experiencing reduced delays due to the improvement in traffic flow and a reduction in the number of stops they have to make while traveling those intersections.”
Traffic light timing improvements to be deployed next week include the following intersections along State Road 19:
State Road 19 at U.S. Highway 441 State Road 19 at Lake Hills Plaza State Road 19 at Ardice Ave. State Road 19 at Lakeview Ave. State Road 19 (southbound) at Lakeshore Drive State Road 19 (northbound and southbound) at Orange Ave. State Road 19 (southbound) at Clifford Ave. State Road 19 at County Road 452Tindale-Oliver & Associates, Inc. (TOA) assisted County staff with pinpointing target areas within the County that can benefit by retiming of the traffic lights. TOA will also be working with County staff on implementing the changes. Funding for the study and roll-out of the changes was made available through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program.
