Students now required to be vaccinated against whooping cough
No shots, no school.
That's the message officials are sending out if students are not immunized against whooping cough come the first day of school.
Beginning Friday, the state Department of Public Health requires students in grades 7-12 who are enrolled in any public or private school to be immunized against pertussis, or whooping cough, with the Tdap vaccination.
"If they don't have them done then they're not going be able to come to school," said Dan Evans, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. If your child has not be immunized against whooping cough, contact the school or district to find out where the Tdap shot is being provided.

www.cdph.ca.gov The Tdap is a single booster vaccine that helps to protect against three diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Some children may have already received the vaccine when they enrolled for their elementary school years.
If this is the case, a note provided to the school from a doctor or health care provider is acceptable, according to a news release from the National Association of School Nurses, or NASN.
"Kids are going to have a set of immunizations before they begin school," said Barbara Miller, immediate past-president of the California School Nurses Organization. "And if they're coming from out of state, they have to meet whatever the requirement is for that grade."
According to the NASA, whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease characterized by severe coughing fits. Whooping cough usually starts like a cold and then turns into a bad cough over time. Coughing can last for more than three months and can make breathing very difficult.
There may also be vomiting after a coughing fit. The whooping sound is usually heard as a person inhales after a coughing fit. Older children and adults are less likely to make the whooping sound. Whooping cough may lead to complications such as pneumonia or rib fracture in adolescents and adults, according to a NASN news release.
The cough was declared an epidemic in 2010 by the Department of Public Health because there were more than 9,400 cases reported, the largest number of whooping cough cases in the state in 65 years, Miller said.
