Clearwater festival brings music to deaf fans with stage-side sign-language ...

As folk singer Dar Williams croons onstage at the Clearwater music festival last weekend, another impassioned performance takes place just to her left.

Kathleen Taylor, a sign-language interpreter from Brooklyn, is throwing her hands, body and face into communicating Williams' music.

A wide smile on his face, Robert Collender, 52, keeps his eyes riveted on Taylor from his folding chair near the stage. It's the first time the deaf architectural tech from Saratoga Springs has attended a music festival staffed with interpreters.

"That's what's so great - that it's very rare," Collender says through an interpreter. "It's just so unexpected. It's way ahead of the rest of the field and I hope other venues will follow their lead."

The 33-year-old Clearwater Great Hudson River Revival, which takes place every Father's Day weekend in Westchester's Croton Point Park, is one of just a handful of U.S. music festivals to provide American Sign Language interpreters. Clearwater was one of the first to start doing so.

The Americans With Disabilities Act, passed in 1990, requires public venues where concerts and plays are held to supply an interpreter if a deaf person requests one. The law gave performing-arts interpreters a big boost and caused their numbers to burgeon. But few groups have gone as far as Clearwater, which has ASL interpreters on all its main stages and by request at other areas.

"It was my wife Toshi's idea," says Clearwater founder and folk legend Pete Seeger. "She organized the Revival back in those days," he says, meaning 1978-79, when the festival was in its infancy and folk singer Holly Near was creating a stir by touring with an interpreter.

Clearwater's guiding principle became accessibility for all, a philosophy evident in the festival's many services for the disabled, including 20 on-site wheelchairs and seating in front of every stage.

"Lives are changed through song and I felt that it's important to make ideas accessible," Near says.

Clearwater, run by the eponymous nonprofit group dedicated to preserving the Hudson River, has 16 interpreters working the two-day event, at a rate of just $125 per day - compared to their typical freelance rate of about $65 an hour.

It's a labor of love, says Jody Gill, director of language, cultural and disability services at NYU Langone Medical Center and a coordinator of Clearwater's ASL program. "We all do this because of the cause, because of the activism, the environment, out of love.
