Des Plaines Library May Drop Annual Fundraiser
The Des Plaines Public Library may cancel their annual Do the Dewey fundraiser because they say the cost of producing the event is outweighing the profit, according to an article at Triblocal.com .
This May's fundraiser, which has been held for the last nine years, cost $6,275 in labor and only brought in $5,149 for the library after the profits were split with the Des Plaines Rotary Club.

The Des Plaines Public Library wants to drop its Do the Dewey fundraiser, saying the cost of staff labor outweighs the profit made from the after-hours, adult-only event.
Employees spent 251 hours in meetings, prepping, and on the actual event, costing $6,275 in staff time. After it split the proceeds with the Rotary Club, the library made about $5,149. Rotary members also volunteer for various tasks, spending just as much time on preparing and co-hosting the event, library officials said.
“I have enjoyed the Dewey for many years…it’s a wonderful event,” said Acting Assistant Director Roberta Johnson, who recommended cutting the fundraiser at a meeting this week. “I’m just sorry that it never became a larger draw.”
The finance committee will review the annual event, which has been held for nine years and costs $35 a ticket, and look at creating a development plan to raise money instead. The library already has programs that encourage patrons to remember the facility in their will and online donation page.
Library staff suggested a family-friendly event take the Dewey’s place, like a bicycling fundraiser. Some trustees said they’d still like an evening event and asked if another library-related organization, like the Friends of the Library, could take the reins. But staff said it would be difficult for another group to take it over, mostly because there would be logistical challenges.
“We’ve sort of got it down to a science now because we’ve done it so many times,” Johnson said.
Trustee Gene Fregetto said he was shocked to learn the library didn’t have an established development plan when he joined the board last year. The more successful the plan is, the more financially secure the library will be, he said.
“It would be nice one day to have half a million dollars of our budget come through development efforts and reduce the taxpayer’s burden,” he said.
