Camp Roberts in a state of disrepair
Most California Army National Guard members who deploy to the killing fields of Afghanistan first train here, a sprawling landscape of barracks, assault courses and firing ranges straddling San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties. Before those soldiers encounter the depredations of war, they face the deprivations of Camp Roberts.
Only 23 San Luis Obispo buildings still need retrofit
Eighty-two percent of the buildings in San Luis Obispo that require seismic retrofit are done being updated leaving only 23 buildings of the 126 structures identified 13 years ago by the city as needing safety improvements.

County looking bad
Let’s see if I have this straight. The April 6 Tribune article entitled “Proposed homeless facility gets big boost from county” states that our Board of Supervisors (three years after the 86-page plan for the “Ten Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness” was written) have declared 1.1 acres off Prado Road as “surplus,” making a site available for their proposed homeless shelter.
If and when this new shelter is built (since the present ones have code violations), homeless children will “get out of cots in churches and into beds.” Who will choose which children get beds since, by the county’s own estimation, there are approximately 2,000 homeless children and approximately 149 beds in the new shelter, which will be available in “several more years”?
Proposal for downtown San Luis Obispo gets a redesign
The plan for Garden Street Terraces the hotel, commercial, retail space and residential condos proposed for downtown San Luis Obispo is back in the hands of city officials after a substantial redesign.
Overall, the changes fall in line with the requirements of the environmental impact report, and recommendations of the council and community to reduce the scale of the project and preserve historic resources, said local architect George Garcia.
In June, the City Council certified the EIR after public testimony on the project, and asked developer WestPac Investments to return at a later date for approval of the project design. Some critics had concerns about the height of the project and retention of historic buildings.
