Duke Nukem Forever (Xbox 360) Review

Duke Nukem 3D was a revolutionary game. Duke Nukem 3D actually put a voice and a character behind the gun, something that was unheard of at the time. Duke was memorable for his lines, popular for fun and engaging gameplay at the time. Duke Nukem 3D was a juggernaut and people eagerly anticipated the release of its sequel Duke Nukem Forever. Well it’s not 1997, but Duke Nukem Forever has finally come out. The problem? It’s not 1997 anymore… Duke Nukem Forever sees the return of “legendary” hero Duke Nukem as he attempts to once again save the world from alien scum. Well, he’s actually in it to save all his women, but saving the world is a nice side effect. Duke Nukem hasn’t changed over the years. He’s as masculine, vulgar, and pissed off as ever, and if you haven’t figured it out the ladies love him. Actually, the whole world loves Duke. Nearly every human you meet in Duke Nukem Forever will worship you as a god. That’s a pretty interesting aspect of the game since storyline wise it takes itself seriously. Since Duke Nukem Forever started development in 1997 and has been in development ever since, it’s sort of like playing the greatest hits version of every first person shooter since the late 90’s. You can actually tell when certain aspects of the genre became popular. For example you’ll run into various physics based puzzles in the game and will be able to tell “oh, this level was probably designed around the time Half-Life 2 came out”. Certain aspects of the game are old school such as the lack of iron sights, yet you’ll see modern influences by things such as a regenerating health bar the ability to only hold 2 weapons at a time. It’s quite interesting to see such a vast combination of different gameplay elements, and it would actually make for a very fun and different game if these elements were good. Unfortunately…. They’re not. There are parts of Duke Nukem Forever that are clever and fun to play. Most of shooting sections are fun. While you can only hold 2 weapons at a time most of the weapons are pretty fun to use. The shotgun especially is awesome. Most of the bosses are pretty fun as long as you don’t mind the formula circle strafing = win. His one-liners are still funny. Duke Nukem has a charm most games can only dream of. But Duke Nukem Forever is more than just shoot-outs and one-liners.

Evidence That Someone Loves Playing Duke Nukem Forever Online

There's been a lot said about Duke Nukem Forever, not much of it good.

But we're slowly starting to hear from people demonstrating how they love the throw-back shooter in their own ways.

Last night it was a couple of buddies who popped open some beers and played the game side-by-side . Today it's Randy Pitchford, whose Gearbox Software managed to wrap the game up and get it out the door.

In this video we see Pitchford gathering to his side a phalanx of celebrities (of a sort), gaming, game culture and Internet folk. He even brings in Ted Price, president and CEO of Insomniac Games.

Their goal? To beat each other up in four-versus-four team death match. That the game comes out looking like something you might want to play with friends in the process is probably more than just a happy coincidence.
