Victims Taken To Hospital After Exposure To Chemicals

BARABOO, Wis. -- Eleven people were hospitalized for excessive chlorine exposure at a Wisconsin Dells area resort Tuesday.

Lake Delton Police said an employee at Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park told them 15 people were having breathing problems when emergency responders first arrived around 6:45 p.m. Eight of them were taken to St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo and three were taken to Reedsburg Area Medical Center to be treated for exposure to chlorine and sulfuric acid.

The patients at St. Clare-- five children and three adults -- each showed symptoms of nausea and throat irritation after inhaling the chemicals, a hospital spokesman said. The injuries are considered non-serious and are not life-threatening. The eight were expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday night, he said. Reedsburg Area Medical Center had no comment on patients taken there.

Nick Laskaris, the owner of the Mt. Olympus Resort, said they shut down one outdoor pool area, which is where the chemical incident happened.

Laskaris said an investigation by his staff showed the incident was triggered by a mechanical malfunction, but police said it was caused by human error during routine maintenance on a pool pump that caused extra chlorine and sulfuric acid to be released into a wave pool.

“The relief is that everyone’s doing well,” said Laskaris. “Mechanical errors, you can always fix those. But, you know, the safety and the health of people, that’s my main concern.”

The equipment has been fixed, tested and was operating correctly as of 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. Laskaris said the resort staff will continue to monitor the equipment to make sure it is operating properly and that water levels are safe. He expected the pool area to reopen at its normal time Wednesday morning.

The incident didn't affect the hotel and the park also remained open.
