Deputies investigate thefts from deceased

Two men have been arrested in the theft of items from a deceased man. Meanwhile, Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating another incident in which the residence of a deceased person was entered and items taken.

Kenneth R. Lucas, 56, of 516 Hecla St., Ironton, and Jake L. Dodson, 18, of 322 Ridgeway St., Coal Grove, were arrested Monday and each charged with criminal trespass and theft.

According to a sheriff’s office report, deputy Steve Sisler was called to a residence on Township Road 136N, Ironton, after someone spotted two men in a white pickup truck allegedly taking two Bolens lawn mowers from the residence of a man who had died.

The witness gave authorities a license plate number reportedly from the pickup.

Sisler ran the plates and determined who owned the truck. He then went to Dodson’s Ridgeway home and allegedly located the two men and the two lawn mowers.

“I also saw the two green Bolens Lawn mowers in an adjoining yard that the residents said had just been put there by people in the suspect’s truck,” Sisler stated in his report.

The two men allegedly confessed to taking the lawn molwers.

On Sunday, a Scottown woman told deputies she had spent the night with family following the funeral of her husband and while she was away, someone broke into her home, a vehicle and two outbuildings.

A chainsaw, tools, socket set and possibly other items were missing. That incident remains under investigation.
