Carey resigns as WU softball coach

Lisa Carey, Washburn’s softball coach for nine years, announced her resignation Friday.

Carey said she stepped down to pursue other career opportunities.

"I'm ready to go in a different direction," Carey said, "whether that's going back to get my master's degree, being an assistant coach (on the Division I level) or starting a new career."

Carey was an all-state high school softball and basketball player at Washburn Rural and a three-time softball All-American at Oklahoma, playing on a national championship team in 2000 when she was Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. Last fall, she was inducted in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Her first coaching job was at Washburn, where she compiled a 256-221 record, the most wins in the program’s history. Carey took the Lady Blues to the NCAA Division II Tournament twice (2006-08), but the program has posted three consecutive losing seasons, including a 19-29 record this past season.

Carey said she felt no pressure to step down.

"No, not at all," she said. "This was my decision. It's something I've been thinking about for a while.

"Loren (Ferré, WU director of athletics) was great to me and I enjoyed working for him. I enjoyed Washburn and I wish the program all the best."

Ferré said a national search will begin immediately to hire a new coach.

“I appreciate all the hard work and commitment Coach Carey has provided to the softball program,” Ferré said in a WU news release. “Lisa has taken the program to two of Washburn’s three NCAA postseason appearances and to the MIAA postseason tournament eight times in nine seasons. We wish her well with her future plans.”

Lisa and her brother DJ were both very good athletes, but like many of the comments above, not all players can be coaches. Both of them struggle with positively influencing the students they teach, no matter the students ages. I enjoyed watching Lisa play, but was frustrated watching her coach. I wish her the best in her new career, whatever that may be. Like another post said, she will make a great assistant coach. Maybe we will see her in that capacity somewhere in Kansas soon. Good luck, Lisa!! Hope your move is a good one for you and your significant other and family!

She lasted this long, sent our daughter to her summer softball camps until our daughter was 10 years old. Moved to the USD 450 School District, based upon some things that happened, that were indirectly related to Carey. Our family has been involved in travel softball over the last 7 years. Got to know a lot of other families, some that had daughters that went to WU. Several of the parents told us that it wasn't a good experience. Would have loved to had our daughter play locally, but that was never going to happen, by our choice.
